7 REASONS TO VISIT ANCIENT PLOVDIV

Post by: Roman Ivanov in Inspiration, 11 Mar 2016
With its 8-millennia history, Plovdiv has been proclaimed the oldest continuously-inhabited city in Europe and the 6th oldest in the world.

The city has been listed under Number 3 in TOP 10 most beautiful ancient cities in the world. In 2015 The Lonely Planet chose Plovdiv as one of the 10 must-visit cities.

The city has a modern vision with an ancient atmosphere which attracts a lot of tourists every day. Plovdiv is not just living in the past, in fact, the city continues to play an important role nowadays, too. Plovdiv is the second biggest city in Bulgaria and the educational, administrative and economic centre of the region. The city is surrounded by fertile lands and has the high flow Maritsa River, as well as being ideally located on seven hills.

1. Beauty and romance.

Plovdiv is located on seven hills with perfect places for sport and cultural events. The romantic and captivating atmosphere of the city can be felt everywhere – whether by enjoying the Lake with Singing Fountains, or whilst having a drink in an art cafeteria.

2. Top events all-year-round.

Plovdiv regularly hosts high-level events set in various areas, whose venues include some cultural sites. “The Night of Museums and Galleries – Plovdiv" became an emblematic event on a national level, offering a programme of various events, high attendance, attracting young audiences, positive energy and organisation.

3. Plovdiv is a paradise for each and every wine lover.

Some of the world's top events in this branch are held here. The tradition of making wine dates back to the Thracians. Nowadays, you can enjoy a glass of wine anywhere – in a restaurant, in a wine shop, or go to different wine tastings. The Young Wine parade in the Old Town is usually held in late autumn.

4. Ancient Roman monuments.

The Roman Path is one of the most preferred tourist routes in the city. The most famous sites are the Ancient Theatre and the Roman Stadium, which are symbols of the city. There is a large number of Ancient monuments preserved, such as the Roman Aqueducts, the Early Christian Basilica, The Odeon, along with the Ancient Forum, and, last but not least, the Ancient Roman Residence “Eirene”. Visit them and enjoy these pieces of antiquity and the atmosphere of the “Ancient and Eternal” city.

5. Enjoy the view of the city from the hills.

Visit the remains of the Ancient Fortress Nebet Hill – this unique hill offers not only a spectacular view of the city, but also gives you the chance to feel the atmosphere of one of the most ancient Thracian settlements in these lands. Go to the Liberators’ Hill to visit the monument of the Russian Liberators or to have a lovely walk in the park on the foot of the hill. In the evening, you can enjoy the spectacular view of Plovdiv from the Youth Hill. In the past, the hill was called Djin Tepe, or “The Hill of the Spirits”, which probably referred to the remains of the Thracian Sanctuaries which lie there.

6. The Rowing Canal.

Rowing Chanel is a popular place for sports and leisure activities. People go there to ride a bike, play tennis or do some jogging. Have a refreshing cup of coffee in the cafes nearby or enjoy traditional dishes in the surrounding restaurants. With its calm and peaceful atmosphere, the Rowing Canal is a must-visit place in Plovdiv, especially when you need some measure time.

7. Plovdiv is the TOP 3 Best European Destination for 2016

Plovdiv has made it into the top 3 of the European Best Destinations 2016 ranking. It has been voted third, after Zadar (Croatia) and Athens (Greece), on a survey held annually by a Brussels-based organisation of the same name.
