We will soon be departing on our skiing adventure in Borovets Bulgaria! Yes, we are thoroughly chuffed about that but we’d like to get practical for a moment and remind you (and ourselves) what the must-take skiing holiday items are!

Must-haves when you go skiing:

(scroll down for essentials when travelling to Bulgaria)

1. Skiing jacket, skiing dungarees or trousers and skiing gloves!

They are all waterproof and designed to cushion your fall, should you take one. And no, your normal winter wear won’t do, unless you live in Alaska!

2. Helmet.

Really important, regardless of whether you’re a beginner or a pro! Protect your beautiful brains in case you lose the fight with gravity!

3. Thermals.

Or skiing base layer, as you’d find it on the Internet! Really useful, they keep you warm and dry.

4. Backpack.

If you really want to treat yourself, go for a special skiing backpack. They are very light and designed to easily attach to cable cars with easy access to the contents.

5. Hat.

I know, it might ruin your hair and all, and that’s not just for the ladies but for the gentlemen too, you’ll be happy you brought one with you! Oh, and invest, don’t just get one from Primark!

6. Protein Bars.

Skiing is not as effortless as it might seem when you watch those pro skiers gliding on the snow. It’s a real calorie burner! Just logging around your equipment will feel exhausting at times, so you’ll need a booster! Stock up that backpack we talked about with some protein bars!

7. Ski socks.

They’re very thick and warm and are specially designed to keep your feet sweat-dry and well comfortable inside your ski boots!

8. Neckwarmer or bacalava.

Now, the balaclava is only needed if you’re skiing somewhere really, really cold. Borovets never really gets cold enough for those, but if you’re geeking out on your ski gear you could get one. What you really shouldn’t leave behind, however, is your neckwarmer. Also useful if you get into a snowball fight (and we’re hoping to get into a few)! You don’t want to leave that gentle area exposed!

9. Sunscreen.

It gets bright on the slope so pack a pocket-sized sunscreen tube. Ideally apply 30 minutes before going to the slope.

10. Vaseline or Lip balms

Same rules apply! Your lips can get pretty chapped in that weather so make sure you avoid that by bringing in a stick of lip balm or some good old-fashioned Vaseline!

11. Moisturiser.

Ladies AND gentlemen, the winter wind can be very cruel to your skin, leaving it parched and irritated. So moisturise before you go to the slope and once you’re back home after a day of skiing fun! We’re not getting any younger after all!

12. Water.

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! Water is life and skiing is a straining activity so you might feel very thirsty up on the slope at some point. A small bottle of water in your backpack would do you good!

Must-haves when travelling to Bulgaria:

1. Local Money – the local currency is called leva. The country does not take euros or any other currency.

2. A power adapter converter – an european is what you need! You can get one of these at any airport in the world or even in a pound shop!

3. Local time – UTC/GMT +2. So, if you're travelling from the UK, two hours forward.

4. Climate – Bulgarian winters are very cold! A lot like winters in Scottland, for instance. So, wrap up! Bring thick PJs, wooly hats, mittens, socks and hot water bottles! Don't forget a good scarf, too!

So there, you have it! For the singles, don’t forget to bring some business cards with you in case you meet someone snow-melting on the slope!
